I once heard a Psychiatrist say, "Naturally, every human has a small degree of madness in his or her system which remains dormant until activated by the right situation or condition…!"
I’m not sure how many sane humans, apart from psychiatrists or similar professionals would readily agree with that submission without any objection! Nevertheless, a closer study of the Bible shows that that psychiatrist might be right after all!
For example, considering the degree of the fear of God he had demonstrated over the years and having learned that Bathsheba’s husband was a young soldier fighting in a battle which he, David supposed to be commanding, one would have expected David to have reconsidered his intention. Sadly, he still went ahead, to defile the woman (vv. 3-5).
Again, when Uriah came from the battle front and mentioned the fact that the ark of the Covenant and the Israelite Army were in the battle front (vv. 7-12), David’s conscience had become so ‘seared with a hot iron’ that the concept of the Ark of the Covenant never struck any chord of remorse or penitence in his heart! He went ahead to murder her husband (vv. 13-27).
